What are the reasons for your engagement with Women In Africa?
At Jumia, we are convinced that diversity is a major asset for the company’s performance. This is why we have made gender equality a strong policy. It is a daily concern both in recruitment and in the life of the company, where we want performance to be the only real indicator that counts for each employee . We are also aware of the immense needs of African women, several tens of millions of whom do not go to school and who are not sufficiently represented in positions of responsibility. But things are moving in the right direction. In sub-Saharan Africa, for example, 22% of parliamentarians were women in 2015, compared to 8% twenty years earlier. This is a big step that places Africa in the global average. We must persevere!
How does Honoris United Universities contribute to the evolution of the African continent and particularly in favour of women? ?
We do a lot of things! First of all for employment, since Jumia has an ecosystem of more than 5,000 direct employees and more than 100,000 entrepreneurs, SMEs, commercial agents (Jforce) partners who work with us on the continent on a daily basis. Our “marketplace” offers the opportunity to thousands of vendors to make their products more visible and accessible through the internet and thus significantly increase their revenues. Thanks to our proximity logistics, we also contribute to reducing territorial disparities by allowing populations in rural areas to have access to a wide choice of products and thus provide solutions to their daily needs. We are also contributing to the development of online payments through JumiaPay, which accelerates the dematerialization of cash transactions and brings digital solutions to a population that still has little access to banking services. For African women in particular, Jumia is involved internally with a working environment that is conducive to the hiring and networking of women. Externally, we are the partner of concrete actions to support women entrepreneurship. These commitments are reflected in our workforce. Today, more than a third of our employees are women and in some countries, such as Kenya, we have achieved parity. There is still a lot to be done and we are on the right track!
What has stayed with you from WIA Summit experience?
Women In Africa is an opportunity to be a voice for change by calling for a stronger presence of women in public leadership positions. It is a unique event to meet and exchange with women from across the continent and beyond. The “talks”, the “masterclasses”, and the B to B meetings are of a very high standard and we are happy that this summit is a way to connect women with each other, wherever they come from.
