Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

My name is Salimata, I am 23 years old and I am currently a master’s student in Marketing at CY Cergy-Paris University. I just finished my gap year during which I had the opportunity to do two internships at Women In Africa.

What’s your academic background so far?

I am currently studying for a Master’s degree in Marketing at CY Cergy Paris University. This training allows me to develop technical knowledge in the major areas of marketing: product and brand policy, communication, digital marketing, distribution, consumer behavior and marketing studies. Before that, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in management that allowed me to develop knowledge about the world and the functioning of a company.

Why did you choose this sector?

I chose the communication sector, first of all because of the diversity of the missions  but also because of the relational aspect that this field implies. I like the idea of connecting a company with its audience.

As a creative and curious person, the fact that this field is constantly evolving is crucial.

What were your internship assignments at WIA?

At Women In Africa, I first worked as a Digital Communication Assistant. My mission was to communicate the activities and news of WIA and its network, as well as contributing to the development of a communications strategy to develop advocacy and to be able to generate a larger community on all the company’s social media platforms.

I then held the position of Versatile Marketing Assistant. I was in charge of the development of the marketing identity of the programs as well as the updating of the website and the implementation of direct marketing action such as the writing of the bimonthly newsletter and the development of local newsletters

What are the main skills to have as an assistant in communication and digital marketing?

The main skills to have are first of all a great rigour and a great organizational capacity. Indeed, we are required to work on several campaigns at the same time and our actions reflect the professionalism of the organization. It is necessary to have a good relationship and know how to work in a team, without forgetting to be creative and do the day before to be informed of the latest news and to be able to propose some.

What do you get from this first experience?

This internship was a very rewarding experience for me both professionally and personally.

I was able to integrate the steps and tools for developing a strategy such as the description or the communication plan that do not only apply to social networks while developing technical skills, especially in the use of several marketing tools such as WordPress for the creation of websites or professional tools for writing and sending emailing campaigns.

I have developed hard skills in terms of using social networks, but also in video editing and photos. I was able to familiarize myself with the tools of the community manager such as Hootsuite.

This internship also allowed me to reinforce many soft skills. I have gained confidence and evolved in my decision-making, expression and formulation skills.   I have also developed my creativity and organizational skills as well as my synthesis skills.

What is your next goal? What are you looking for as your next work experience?

In September, I return to university for 4 months for my last year of Master in Marketing, dominant 360° communication. I intend to choose luxury marketing as my elective course.

I am looking for an internship that can start in January 2023.

I would like to do this final internship in the field of corporate or commercial strategic communication, or in operational marketing in order to develop and implement marketing action plans. I don’t close any doors on the business.

I will use all the knowledge and skills acquired at Women In Africa.

Finally, what is WOMEN IN AFRICA for you?

Women In Africa is a team and an international community that works and comes together around a common ambition: promoting African women entrepreneurs, the future of the continent.
